Temperature stress testing machine

Main application:

A revisited TSTM system was developed for testing concrete since setting time under free and restraint conditions. The machine is totally programmable and controlled (force and displacement of each sensor) by computer. The device is composed by a fixed steel head, a central unidimensional part and a moving end. The mould has a dog-bone shape in order to work in tension and in compression since the setting. The measurements of the displacements are taken in the central part where the stress field is assumed to be homogenous. The measurement of these values allows defining at all times the stress and strain inside the cement based material. The risk of cracking can then be defined with restrained shrinkage test. For the determination of the creep properties, a dummy mould was realized for the measurement of the thermal and autogenous deformations. 2 instrumentations where developed according to the kind of test. The first instrumentation is based on Invar© rod which is anchored in the concrete. The second instrumentation uses an extensometer in Invar©. Tests are carried out in a climatic room with a constant or variable temperature and in sealed or unsealed condition. A very good control of the temperature inside the sample is assured since the casting thanks to a thermal insulation system. It is also possible to monitor the damage in the sample with the acoustic emission.
